Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Los Angeles Dodgers

NL WestLos Angeles, CANational LeagueClosed 1961

When the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles in 1958, they played in the 93,000-seat Memorial Coliseum while Dodger Stadium was being constructed. The short left-field fence (only 250 feet) resulted in a 40-foot screen and a uniquely odd playing environment. The Dodgers drew enormous crowds and won the 1959 World Series here.

Did You Know?

  • The Coliseum set an MLB attendance record of 93,103 for an exhibition game in honor of Roy Campanella, who had been paralyzed in a car accident.

  • The left-field 'screen' rose 40 feet above a foul pole only 250 feet from home plate — resulting in unusual statistics for a World Series venue.

  • The Dodgers won the 1959 World Series here over the Chicago White Sox, drawing over 92,000 fans for games 3, 4, and 5.
